”PRAYING MOTHER” is a figurative study on the posture of prayer and intuition. The account of Naomi and her daughter in law, Ruth keeps appearing in my reading time as an inspiration of womanly intuition. I list Naomi first because she suggests that Ruth goes to the threshing floor and it’s this kind of gut instinct I pay attention to and celebrate (although this painting isn’t a direct reference to Ruth.) The idea of calling out, forecasting what may or may not be there is a natural concept to put on canvas. In this blocky work, the figure shows both her folded hands and perhaps a revelation of something discovered within her hands. While her hands work to pray, God is moving.
