In Jerusalem there is a pool with five porches called Bethesda near the sheep gate. ³ Inside these porches lay many sick people. Some were blind. Some could not walk. Some could not move their bodies. ⁴ (*An angel of the Lord came at certain times and made the water move. All of them were waiting for it to move. Whoever got in the water first after it was moving was healed of whatever sickness he had.)

Inspired from this passage in John 5, “BACK TO BETHESDA”, is about a desire for submersion into Bethesda’s pool of healing waters. Because there seemed to be competition involved, deeply saturated turquoise green is used as a nod to an envious nature - perhaps of those going back for another attempt.

Out of 2 Kings 5: “So Naaman went down to the Jordan River and dipped himself seven times, as the man of God had instructed him. And his skin became as healthy as the skin of a young child, and he was healed!”

This fluid interpretation of Naaman’s “dip” involves many thin layers of oils. In reading the whole story, note the hesitation this army commander had when the prophet Elisha told him to wash himself in a river that was dirtier than others he would have preferred. Because of this, I chose not to submerge the painting in watery colors and instead make 7 distinct turquoise markings over flesh tones and gray - a color that sometimes represents death. The death of Naaman’s skin (leprosy) was the condition he was healed of.

The second time it returned with a fresh olive leaf in its beak, a sign. After seven days, Noah sent it out again. This time it did not come back. It often takes more than one flight to fight for breakthrough. In the end, a promise fulfilled. This painting was made using ethically sourced dove feathers and tones of gray, white, green and mint on wood board, a nod to the ark. Green over gray to symbolize the triumph of life over storm. From Luke chapter 8 - She was broke. She was bleeding. She got a healing so powerful it went straight from Jesus into her body and stopped 12 years of disease. This painting was underpainted using red wine sourced from Northern Israel where this breakthrough miracle took place. Pigments and oils were mixed (with a dark red cabernet sauvignon) to create tones, textures and bubbles for contrasting movement against a white background.
